Założenia (opisowo): | If the wars of the XX century were fought for oil, the wars of the XXI century will be fought for water, former World Bank president Ismail Serageldin said in 1995. The growing demand for water and the ongoing climate changes are becoming the source of armed conflicts. Wars over water are not a new phenomenon, they have been fought since the dawn of civilization. The threat of water conflicts is increasing, and in the 21st century, some of these conflicts are ongoing, but we have very little information about them. Very often, disputes over access to water are presented as ethnic or religious conflicts. It is widely believed that the world's water resources are in a state of crisis - due to prolonged drought and climate change, rapid urbanization and competitive demands, and institutional collapse. What are the drivers of crisis and management failure? The goal of the course is to get acquainted with the conflicts and disputes over water that are currently taking place in various regions of the world, the analysis of water policy of individual countries, and ways to solve the problems. We pay special attention to the role of influential international organizations (e.g. the World Bank, Global Water Partnership, United Nations) in tandem with a more in-depth analysis of countries and regions (e.g. Chile, Spain, Mexico, Australia, the United States, and the European Union) political experiences and experiments are of international importance in the water world. The main aim of the course is: to help students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the social dimension and management, and global water problems, drawing from different analytical perspectives of law, geography, political science, and development studies. By the end of this course, students will be able to: Define key terms, trends, and organizations in global water policy. Characterize, compare and critically evaluate water management policy reforms and case studies, drawing from different perspectives and disciplines. |
