Pełny opis: |
(tylko po angielsku) The course will begin with a short introduction to animal studies in general: the brief history of researching animal cognition, the main approaches such as evolutionism and behaviourism, and the main debates concerning anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism in animal studies. Main methodological issues will be discussed as well as the general difficulties we have in maintaining an objective stance towards animal research. The following lectures will be organised around specific topics in animal cognition, namely: perception, categorization, intelligence and problem solving, tool use, emotions and attitudes towards death social congition and communication, linguistic capabilities, self-consciousness, and animal "madness". In presenting an overview of important research on those subjects I will be concentrating on possible implications for cognitive science, especially regarding representationalism and embodied cognition. In the final part of the course I will focus on the ethical dimension of animal research and, in particular, on how much our ethical stance towards animals can and should be influenced by the findings of animal cognition. I will also touch upon the issue of the legal status of animals. |
