This introductory course covers only the basics of the subject. Main concepts and theories developed by social and cultural anthropologists will be analysed, on examples from tribal traditional societies as well as modern industrialized societies. The course is to analyse and explain the cultural diversity of traditoional and modern societies.

Prerequisites -- none.

The number of hours of teaching assignments by forms of teaching -- 30 hours of discussion classes.

Teaching methods -- assessment of students' activity during classes, preparation and presentation of issues related to the content discussed during classes, consultations.

ECTS point -- 6

The balance of the students' work -- discussion classes 30 hours, preparation for the classes and exam -- 60 hours, consultations 15 hours, essay -- 40 hours, exam 5 hours. In sum -- 150 hours.

Quantitative indicators of the students' work related to classes: a/ that require direct involvement of the teacher (including lectures and consultations, during which the student may discuss the questions under consideration -- 50 hours; b/ that do not require direct involvement of the teacher (preparation for classes, independent studies) -- 100 hours.

Knowledge:

Student knows and understand the basic anthropological concepts, can define specific research problems characteristic for social anthropology -- S1_W01;

Student knows various types of individual and collective identities -- S1_W20.

Students understands the role of individual in the shaping of the features of various types of collectivities on various levels of the social structure -- S1_W22.

Student understands the origins and transformations of social norms -- S1_W26

Skills:

Student can apply various typologies of cultural phenomena to their analysis -- S1_U01.

Student can give an oral presentation on topics linked to the content of the course, using social-anthropological sources -- S1_U20.

Student can give a presentation using multimedia -- S1_U22.

Social competences:

Student is aware of the dynamics of terminology and methodology within social anthropology -- S1_K02.

Student is ready to perform the group tasks and can take various roles in the task group. S/he feels the need to lead the task group in a creative way -- S1_K03.

Student is aware of the complexity od social and cultural life and is sensitive and responsive toward the cultural relativism -- S1_K10.

Students should attend the classes, actively participate in them, give a presentation and write an essay. Positive assessment of the discussion classes and written exam is necessaty to complete the course.
