  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Full description:

The class includes practicing oral and written expressions on topics connected with selected items of English language literature. It will be held in the style of a book discussion club, which means that one person (or 2, depending on the number of students) presents a selected story, poem or novella, after which the group discusses its problems, and finally each student writes an essay on an issue inspired by the selected text. The class is dedicated to those who like reading!

Learning outcomes:

Students extend their vocabulary, can prepare a presentation on literature, discuss selected texts and write on them reviews, analysis and essay.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The class is completed provided the student produces:

two presentations (one on a prose text, one on a poem) (40%),

notes from the class (10%),

students' 3 texts: a review, a poem analysis and an essay, (45%, 15% for each written text),

Contribution to class discussions also matters! (5%)

This 20 hour course will focus on developing English language skills and cultural awareness through a wide spectrum of interactive activities which will include text analysis, vocabulary development, as well as speaking and writing activities. The input will be provided by a selection of podcasts by Garrison Keillor

A Prairie Home Companion: News from Lake Wobegon available on Podbean. The final credit will be based on attendance, active participation and a Project Work prepared by students.

Project Guidelines:

Each student selects a podcast which is available on-line and prepares a series of activities which will be presented to the group on a given class date. A selection of the activities will be conducted with the group. The final (full version of the project, including the 5 minute script of the chosen stand-up) is to be printed out and handed in during the last meeting.

The project should consist of:

1. Front page containing information about the author, stand-up artist, URL to the selected stand-up, length of the stand-up.

2. Activities to the selected stand-up. The language level of the activities should be adjusted to the level of the students in the group.

b. Listening activity

c. Vocabulary activity

d. Speaking activity

e. Writing activity

f. Cultural context activity.

3. Script of minimum 5 minutes of the podcast.

4. Key to the activities.

Grade for the Project will be based on the quality and inventiveness of the activities, accuracy of the script and the quality of the presentation of the project and activities to the group.
